WARRIOR MINDSET

NEVER GIVE UP.   NEVER QUIT.   KAIZEN.

Day 33

Class today was Basics. It’s a discipline and focus drill where you get commands in Japanese and execute the specific movements or attacks.

Sah Don Banue

Very fun to do those as they get called out to you.

Then I hit the gym for a brutal workout. Dead lifts, rows, bench press and other sets of full body type work. Then hit the court and ran about 13 laps, with 1 or 2 being a sprint to catch back up to my running partner. Finished out the day with 20 minutes of full stretching.

Gloriously exhausted now.

Day 28

Good long day back in the saddle. Hit the gym hard with a fast mile and a circuit. Then worked all my kicks and kata for rank test tomorrow night. Then followed up with 1 hour of kick and punch drills.

Later I went to fight class at the Dojo which is an hour of warm ups and at least 6 rounds of fights.

It was a long day but worth it to prepare for tomorrow.

Training

Hit the gym today, ran a mile (all out at 8 min/mile pace for the last ¼ of it) then did a weight circuit. Then hit the open room for a round of kicks and self-defense practice. Did some work on the focus mits, mostly combos and finished up with kata practice. All in all a fast paced 2 hours.

Much needed.

Day 24

First one-on-one lesson with Sensei. Worked through Taigo One footwork and full movement, what felt like 100 times. The cool part was the interaction between Sensei and his Sensei who called while we were working. He just put him on speaker phone and included him. Very fun!

I’m feeling more confident now after this lesson than before going into rank test next month. Still a ways to go before I feel ready. Next up is a written test and a 5-8 page paper all due before the 10th of February. Time to get to work.

After class I hit the gym for 2 hours and did some power lifting for the first half and then kick-boxing for the 2nd half. Did some power/push kicks to work on actually using them.

Tonight is the boy’s belt awards ceremony, we’ll find out if either one passed their last test and also watch some board breaking. It’s going to be a fun evening in the Dojo.

Day 17

Today’s class was kicks for warmup and then Taigo 1 Kata with the blocks and punches worked in. I feel great about my Kata, at least from today. My kicks were not very well executed, telling me I need more work there.

Sensei invited me for my first belt test on February 22nd. I’m definitely worried about that given it will be directly after 2 long trips for me and i’ll have missed 4 of my normal classes. I’ll just have to start working very hard from here out in January so that February is all review.

Post Karate I went to the gym with Giovanni and worked out our Olympic set, I nearly puked twice. Simply cannot go for a full week without hitting this set, too much can be lost too fast on this thing.
