WARRIOR MINDSET

NEVER GIVE UP.   NEVER QUIT.   KAIZEN.

Training: Kata (Mountains)

Several times I went on a hike to do Kata up in the Mountains of NC somewhere this weekend.

First hike me and my son got up at 6:00am, before daybreak, and hiked up to Triple Falls in Dupont Forest. It was freezing, literally, 30 degrees. The boy was cold… Got up to the falls and did several Kata: Taigo 1, Pinan 1, Too San & Sieunchin + video recorded them for Blackbelt requirements too.

Good stuff…

Second hike was up to a small lake about a mile up from our cabin. Got there and did a few Kata as well: Too San, Taigo 3 & Seisan. There were briars all around and my foot got caught up in one patch of them. Not fun, still picking thorns out even tonight…

Super cool weekend up in the mountains, even with the fires burning just a few miles away. I could use about 3 more days up there.

Kata: Worked Kata as a group, but did Too San and Naihanchin. Good ones to dig into really.

Then worked on Siaunchin for a few sets. Sensei asked me to do it again for him and he fine tuned some stuff for me and fixed the ending. I was doing it as one move when it should be two distinct moves.

Then we did Konku on our own for the rest of the class. I made it though pretty well and felt good overall with my work today.

Weapons + Kata: Started class off with 5 basic Kata in a row with little break. I worked on pacing myself so I wasn’t wiped. Then we paired off and drilled Sai and Sai Kata. Worked on technique.

Brown & Blackbelt Class: Kata

Special guest tonight was Ms. Hazel. It was really my first interaction with her via Karate and she was quite nice and very informative about Kata. I feel like she really knows her stuff indeed.

We started off with 8x laps around the floor. Then lined up and drilled Kata. All together then 1 student doing Kata on their own: Feet only Taigo 1, Taigo 1 hand and feet, Taigo 2, Taigo 3, Pinan 1 (I did Pinan 1 on my own…)

Then we split off into smaller groups again and worked on one Kata on our own. I was in the Empi group. I drilled in 3 or 4 times.

Then we named all the fish in Sensei’s new fish tank. 🙂

Training: Dojo + Filming

Went in super early this morning and did some filming of Kata. Worked Giin and then Sieunchin for about a dozen times each. I ran through Bo 1 & Bo 2 to warm up a bit too.

Tried really hard to focus on technique and quality. I feel like the ‘fight’ suffers for me when I do that, but I have to train it all.
