This morning during sparring class, something special happened. After about 12 rounds, one of my students landed a perfectly timed front kick. It was so clean and effortless that I couldn’t help but feel proud. It was a moment that reminded me of why I do this—to help my students grow and improve.
I know some might feel challenged in that situation or feel the need to prove themselves, but for me, it was a confirmation that I’m on the right path. My goal has always been for my students to surpass me, just as my Sensei taught me. There’s something truly fulfilling in seeing the people you teach excel at something you love.

Congratulations to Mr. Even Owen Shodan (1st Degree) Blackbelt.
He has tested for 3 days, from the ocean to the mountains. Conquering fear, fatique, real storms and facing down a board comprised of some of the best Blackbelts i’ve ever known.
As my Sensei has said “The body will go as far as the MIND tells it to.” I have witnessed Evan overcoming this weekend and it is beautiful.
What an EPIC weekend for us both.
I cannot thank my Sensei Brian Pena enough for EVERYTHING he has done for me, the board for giving their time on Saturday and to Ms. Hammock, Thomas and Erik Crawford as well as Chris Gray for his excellent services as Sempai this weekend.
