This is a series of episodes where we explore a deep dive into a book that has changed my life. We will go chapter by chapter and review the things that make it work so well with hope that you will find inspiration to help you with your own journey.
I am usually accompanied by long-time friend, fellow SEALFitter and badass, Heather Bauer Dughaish @bmbrbauer (https://www.voteheatherbauer.com/). Along with her husband we all co-own a gym; Workhorse Fitness together in Columbia, South Carolina.
The Way of the SEAL by Mark Divine
Chapter 5: Forge Mental Toughness
Read that chapter to take a deep dive into how you can utilize the tactics Mark shares with us how to get a handle on your mental tougness.
Section titles such as these:
Control your response
Control your attention
Develop emotional resilience
Harness your emotions
Build your self-esteem
Take your eyes off yourself
Set effective goals
Making excellence a habit by focusing on excellence habits. This is possibly my most favorite way to reframe or frame changing who you are and what you do.
Mark works with you to practice breathing for self-control. Using breath to counter balance all the uncomfortable-ness and bad-ness you may experience in the world. Not only that but learning to ‘listen to your gut’ so you can intercept your emotions and control it a bit better.
There’s much more to this chapter too, honestly if you don’t read any other parts of this book, focus on this one. It helps you break apart your anxiety or what can be giving you anxiety and puts it back together again. Reframed and ready to take it on head first.
Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go.William Feather
Mark has been doing something on his youtube channel called “the daily brief”. I find them super helpful to get me in the mindset I need to be each day he drops one. Some serious knowledge bombs on these. He recently did one on “Looking inward” the core idea is that you are what you think/believe. So focus on positive things, build excellence habits and get after it daily.
